Have you ever seen a 50 gallon barrel or drum? You know, the kind that holds
oil, or water, or something else like that?
Well, they are usually opened and emptied by first removing the small stopper on
the top.
Then, a tap is inserted into the opening. Next, when the barrel is placed in its
holder on it’s side, it can be emptied by using the tap.
Well, this is all well and good...until you try to remove the stopper, only to
find that it is way too tight to remove with your hands (which, usually, they are)!
You probably then look around for a wrench or a screwdriver to try and twist it out, which might
work for awhile, but eventually you will wear away the nubs on the stopper, rendering it stuck and useless. If this
happens, you are in trouble.
So, how do you open the barrel without ruining this stopper? Well, that is a good question, and
here is the answer: you need a bung wrench.
A bung wrench, also commonly known as a drum wrench or barrel wrench, is a wrench that is
specifically designed with these stoppers in mind. They have the appropriate nubs on them that allow them to loosen
and remove the stopper without ruining it, making them the best tool for this job.
If you are looking for a bung wrench, barrel wrench or drum wrench so that you can open these
barrels the right way, then here are a few things to keep in mind. First of all, make sure that the kind of drum
you are trying to open has a standard sized stopper on it. Most of them are the same, but there are a few out there
that are a different size.....so, if at all possible, take a spare stopper with you when you go to buy your bung
wrench, just to make sure that it fits right.
If you are going to order your drum wrench online, then read the specifications of the wrenches
and compare them to the type of barrel or drum that you're planning to open.
You could take the stopper into your local store and ask them if the barrel wrench you plan to
order will work for the stoppers you need to loosen, but like I said before....these stoppers are pretty standard,
and a bung wrench will most likely work on the majority of these types of lids.
As far as price goes, you should definitely not have trouble buying a drum wrench to do what you
want it to do, without spending a fortune. You can spend up to $100, or as little as $10.
However, you should consider how much you will use the barrel wrench. If you are going to be
using it every day to open several barrels, you might want to buy wrenches that are of higher quality, or even one
that has a lifetime warranty or guarantee on it, as these can break with a lot of use. But, if you just need one
laying around to open a barrel once in awhile, any bung wrench may suffice. You don’t necessarily need to spend a
lot on one if you are only going to use it once or twice!
